Thank you for your interest in Parkland Search and Rescue. Our home base is in Stony Plain, and our primary response area is Parkland County, which straddles the Yellowhead Highway from the Edmonton city limits in the east to the Pembina River in the west, and from the North Saskatchewan River in the south to roughly Lac St. Anne in the north, including the municipalities of Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. As you can see, we have a large response area and most of our searches are rural and bush related. We often work with other groups in the Capital Region as well.
All search and rescue volunteers in Alberta must meet the same basic training requirements: Search and Rescue Basics, Standard First Aid, and CPR. We provide this training when you become a member. In addition, our training is enhanced through Wilderness First Aid training, evidence gathering, and extra first aid skills related to assessing and packaging subjects away from urban areas. We practice these basic skills and add new skills to our repertoire every year, including such skills as: man tracking, swift water rescue, ice rescue, SAR leadership, outdoor survival, outdoor awareness, and mock searches.
We are tasked by the RCMP for live person searches, evidence searches and forensic searches.
We have a monthly group business meeting, and we hold training sessions every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In addition, we offer weekend courses in specialized skills. Members attend these courses as their schedule permits, although there are minimal requirements to be met each year. I would invite you to attend our Wednesday training at anytime to see if you might be interested in the group. We meet at the PSAR Hall in Stony Plain which is located at 4908 – 51 Avenue, Stony Plain.
